Felting workshop Inspirations from nature – complex 3d felted objects
Nature offers an endless variety of structures, surfaces and forms that can be an interesting starting point for felted objects.
We can feel inspired by various aspects: colour blends, contrasts and shadow effects, (a)symmetry, repetitions, rhythm and setting/grouping of single elements, interaction of inside and outside, small and large elements etc.
Apart from that, we can observe natural principles like stability, connections or proportions, and apply them to our feltworks.
In this class we will explore various material combinations and versions of layout for organic formal elements: petals, pockets, cups, seedpods etc. Combining them: connecting, aligning, overlapping … and using a planful setting of resists to create hollow spaces that can be opened and unfolded later, we can create surprising 3d structured surfaces or complex spacial objects. As an example we will start with poppy seedpods.
You will discover the variety of possible interpretations of one single natural “model”, the diversity of possible perspectives and technical options and the differences in shape and character of the resulting felt objects.
These exercises and experiences can be very helpful for any future creative felting process, decorative or art pieces and even wearables.
Please bring interesting natural objects (or pictures of them) for inspiration !
